Higher Tariffs on Canadian Lumber May Drive Up Prices

Higher Tariffs on Canadian Lumber May Drive Up Prices

Tariffs planned for later this year

While the Trump administration has ordered 25 percent more lumber production on federal lands, new tariffs on Canadian lumber later this year could raise lumber prices overall.

Current anti-dumping tariffs on Canadian lumber are 14.5%, but the U.S. Department of Commerce is set to more than double those tariffs to 34.5%. The Department of Commerce will announce its decision this week, and the increased tariffs would kick-in August or September.

Tariff conflicts over Canadian lumber are nothing new.  They have been going on for many years.  President Trump recently exempted Canadian and Mexican lumber imports from new tariffs, but the new Department of Commerce decision would dramatically increase lumber tariffs later this summer.
