Description

This training is being offered by Simonson Lumber, and performed by Rum River Consultants. Come learn what it is, why it matters, how to use R602.10 to design code-complaint buildings and challenging areas and paths to compliance. Lunch will be provided.

Course Details:

  • What is it, and why does it suddenly matter
        • Brief history of wall bracing
        • What the code learned after recent storms
        • Why it matters examples
        • Lateral loads (wind) and they interact with a structure
  • Wall bracing: how to use R602.10 to design code-compliant buildings
        • Definitions: braced wall lines, braced wall panels, braced wall line spacing
        • Compliance path using intermittent vs continuously sheathed options
        • Braced wall panel details for construction
        • How to calculate how much wall bracing is required, vs how much is provided on the plans
        • Window exposure category,
  • Challenging areas and paths to compliance
        • Garage fronts
        • Tall wall: walls that exceed 12' in height (engineered wood tall walls for example) and how that can be prescriptive vs when structural engineering is required

This course will be MN-focused: and will not waste time covering seismic provisions, or some of the old bracing methods that are permitted but seldom used.
